Donors Choose
Looking for a way to support our 4th grade classrooms? Might you consider making a tax deductible donation through donorschoose.org to support our students?
DonorsChoose.org is a nonprofit organization that helps public school teachers in the United States obtain funding for their classroom projects. As of this date, they've helped teachers receive almost 500 million dollars in funding for their classrooms and have impacted over 19 million students! This page has links to helpful resources for teachers who use DonorsChoose to obtain funding for classroom materials and supplies.
Current projects:
Light the Fire for Reading - (This project expires on September 18th)
My students need 5 Kindle Fire tablets and cases to ensure all students have the equitable access to digital literacy.
These tablets will allow all students access to high interest texts across the curriculum as well as to reach our most reluctant readers; BOYS.
When Life Gives you Lemons ... Run a Business
We are requesting Alexa Dots so kids can see applications of technology in their daily learning and incorporate 21st Century literacy skills.
Imagine a classroom where students build lifelong research and real-world skills. The Alexa Dots will allow students to develop creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration skills while integrating math and literacy concepts through building lemonade stands. Students will be able to ask Alexa questions such as “Alexa, How many lemons do we need to make a gallon of lemonade?” “Alexa, how much should we sell our lemonade for?” Alexa will provide endless possibilities to cultivate a lifelong love of learning for a great group of 9 and 10 year olds!
Coding Teaches Empathy and Tolerance - (for a limited time all donations are being doubled - for example, if you get a $10 donation, An Anonymous Funder will automatically make it worth $20!)
Students will learn to code as well as tolerance and empathy through reading while incorporating technology, communicating and collaborating with classmates, using critical and creative thinking skills - the 4C’s using Sphero Educational Robots.
The Spheros will help students learn about the characters in the books they read. Students will learn to code in order to program the robots using textual evidence to support their interpretations of the personality, emotions, and motivations of the characters. They will then have to decide how the Spheros, a simple round ball that can light up, could represent those qualities. While reading the book “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio, students will pick a chapter of the book and program the Sphero to light up based on the character’s feelings for example: Sphero may light up in quick red bursts over and over while bouncing back and forth of the wall -- showing the anger and unfairness over his dog dying.
